The qualification holder will be able to:

  • autonomously study, critically assess, interpret and evaluate modern communication processes in the European and global social context,
  • autonomously formulate research problems in the field of the mass media and carry out technical or research projects,
  • participate in the professional community and keep abreast of new developments in the field of study,
  • autonomously use sources and literature from the field of communication studies and other fields for theoretical and practical work in the field of communication studies and media studies and more widely,
  • critically assess sources and information or communication processes in society and on this basis produce an autonomous written text (specialist or general-interest article, report, paper etc.),
  • participate in the market of creative intellectual work in the journalistic field (journalism, media relations),
  • demonstrate mastery of the basic concepts, dilemmas and perspectives of the communication studies discipline and communication studies research methods,
  • demonstrate familiarity with disciplines and fields of study related to communication studies and use them in an interdisciplinary context,
  • critically assess and address technical and practical issues from the field of media studies and communication studies in contemporary Slovene society and more widely,
  • demonstrate mastery of analytical or research techniques for identifying the needs of consumers, finding market niches in the media space, designing media campaigns, etc.,

(subject-specific competences)

  • demonstrate knowledge of the basic disciplines in the field of media studies,
  • use methodological tools to research media and mass communication,
  • critically analyse and research media content,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the historical development of the mass media and the historical facts of their functioning, impact and institutional structuring,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the basics of social and political psychology, with a particular emphasis on the psychological aspects of communication and the psychological impact of the media,
  • demonstrate proficient knowledge of a foreign language with specialist media/communication studies terminology,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the general context of the ethical and moral dilemmas of the modern knowledge society,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical concepts and practical functioning of print media,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the theoretical concepts and practical functioning of television in modern society,
  • demonstrate mastery of public oratory, debate, argumentation and rhetorical skills,
  • express themselves critically and clearly in public; publish articles,
  • demonstrate knowledge of basic legal practice in the field of media law.

Assesment and completion:

Students' knowledge is assessed by means of practical exercises and seminar papers, and also via products, projects, performances, services, etc. and by examinations. Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10). 

Progress:

Students may progress to the next year if by the end of the academic year they have completed all course units prescribed by the study programme for progression to the next year.
