Entry conditions

Completed:

  • first-cycle study programme in the field of social work, sociology, social pedagogy, pedagogy, psychology or law involving acquisition of 240 credits or
  • first-cycle study programme in another professional field involving 240 credits; previously the candidate must have passed differential examinations (20 credits), including three subjects of 4 credits each, and practical work amounting to 8 credits; subjects are: introduction to social work, theory of social work, research seminar and practice; in accordance with Article 38 of the Higher Education Act, these obligations must be fulfilled prior to enrolment in the master’s programme or
  • three-year revised first-cycle study programme involving acquisition of 180 credits; the candidate must complete an extra year and thereby acquire the missing 60 credits or
  • 4-year professional higher education programme in the fields set out in the first indent; the candidate may enrol in the master’s programme under the conditions given in the first indent or
  • 4-year professional higher education programme in another professional field; the candidate may enrol in the master’s programme under the conditions given in the second indent or
  • 3-year professional higher education programme; the candidate may enrol under the conditions given in the third indent.

A student is qualified to:

  • critically assess modern theories and existing practices regarding mental health in the community,
  • pursue autonomous professional community work with people with mental health difficulties,
  • critically evaluate the existing mental health service in the community,
  • plan and implement a practical innovative project based on evaluated needs,
  • understand, critically evaluate and apply different methods of qualitative research,
  • research together with users and other actors,
  • understand gender and cultural issues in the context of mental health and anti-discriminatory principles,
  • recognise and reflect on own prejudices,
  • reflect on experiences during practical work and integrate theory and practice,
  • introduce new knowledge to existing teams,
  • apply relevant domestic and international resources,
  • write scientific texts,
  • cooperate in international scientific and practical work,

  • be familiar with the socio-political dimensions of mental health in the community, its legal aspects and scope for development,
  • know of new forms of social services in Slovenia and abroad and the socio-political and economic processes involved in them,
  • know the characteristics and special features of the more prominent systems of ensuring social security services in European countries,
  • know the functioning of mental health institutions,
  • know the labelling processes,
  • organise support in the community following release from an institution (special social institutions, hospitals etc.),
  • know the concepts and method of individual planning, formulate an individual plan and assume an appropriate role in its fulfilment,
  • know the legislation in the area of mental health and the methods of advocacy,
  • master the skill of practising advocacy,
  • assess risk and possess the skills to make a systematic and in-depth analysis of a risky situation,
  • pursue interdisciplinary links between different experts and team work with the aim of jointly seeking appropriate solutions,
  • critically analyse existing practices in handling the stories of users,
  • describe a situation, conduct and record an interview and keep documentation according to the principles of good practice,
  • understand the issue of mental health from the position of experiencing it,
  • understand psychoanalytical theory and the links between mental and social processes,
  • understand the processes and mechanisms of events in the group and know how to apply that knowledge in managing groups,
  • know the methods and dynamics of prevention,
  • evaluate services in terms of anti-discriminatory principles, make an action plan based on the evaluation and implement more sensitive practices.

Assesment and completion

Examination performance is scored as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

The programme for students who meet the conditions for the relevant undergraduate programme (240 credits) lasts one year. Students who collect less credits in the undergraduate programme or who have not completed the relevant programme must acquire additional credits through a programme of additional professional study.
