A candidate who has completed the following may enroll in the double major second level pedagogical study programmme Teaching English:

  • A first level university programme of at least 180 ECTS in English language and literature;
  • A first level study programme in other professional fields if, before enrollment, the candidate fulfills the obligations in the range of 5-30 ECTS, essential for continuation of study: Fundamentals of Functional Literacy in English, Formology of English Language and Literature and other obligations the candidate is designated by the Department of English and American Studies,
  • Graduates of university study programmes in English language and literature accepted before June 11, 2004 are acknowledge for study credits of up to 30 ECTS and a corresponding number of ECTS credits in the second major programme of the double major programme.
  • Eligibility is also fulfilled by those who have completed equivalent education abroad and are proficient in English at level C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference.

General competences:

  • able to communicate effectively with students and develop a positive learning environment and good relationships with and among students,
  • be able to differentiate students according to their level in their cognitive, social and emotional development, learning style and strategies, etc.,
  • be able to teach in clear language that is appropriate to the students' developmental stage and in a stimulating way,
  • be able to ask questions to students, to get their response and to encourage students to ask questions and to talk, to discuss,
  • understand the meaning and be able to solve problems collaboratively,
  • knows and understands the principles of contemporary foreign language teaching and be able to apply them in the planning and implementation of teaching activities,
  • be able to plan, implement and evaluate the learning process and set long-term and short-term learning goals,
  • be able to take into account the developmental characteristics and individual characteristics of students and the principles and factors of successful learning
  • demonstrate proficiency in English adapted for the purpose of teaching a foreign language at school (pedagogical subject knowledge),
  • knows and knows how to apply modern principles, methods and techniques of knowledge assessment and evaluation,
  • knows and knows how to plan and prepare different learning activities and teaching aids to effectively achieve the desired learning goals,
  • be able to effectively use materials (textbooks, workbooks, etc.) and teaching aids for teaching and to plan and independently produce materials for foreign language teaching and learning (eg language exercises),
  • be able to use modern information and communication technology in teaching and pedagogical work,
  • knows and understandds the importance of research work for the teaching profession and is able to plan and conduct small-scale applied research (so-called class research) in the field of teaching and learning English.
  • master organizational and administrative tasks related to the planning of the learning process (spatial, time planning, etc.), monitoring and evaluation,
  • master the basic skills of class management: time and space management, organization and management of work with individual students and the whole class, working in pairs and groups,
  • is familiar with the characteristics and the way the school operates (assets, teams of teachers, project schools, etc.)
  • knows basic school law and documentation
  • be able to communicate effectively and cooperate with teachers and other school staff
  • knows the forms of cooperation with parents.
  • knows and understands the broader (philosophical, sociological, moral-ethical) dimensions of education and teaching in his professional environment and society in general, and developed a critical attitude towards his teaching,
  • able to critically reflect  his / her teaching work and to plan his / her professional development.

 

Subject-specific competences:

  • understand the phenomena and legalities of the English language and demonstrate the ways of thinking and behavior that are specific to the subject, with particular regard to the needs of teaching English (educational linguistics),
  • know and understand the principles and legalities of teaching English in accordance with modern pedagogical, psychological and didactic lessons and apply them in the planning and implementation of pedagogical activities,
  • be able to communicate in English or had communicative (linguistic, sociolinguistic, pragmatic, etc.) competence at level C1 (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages),
  • demonstrate literacy in English for the purposes of teaching English at different levels of teaching,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the processes of adopting a foreign language,
  • know and know how to use appropriate terminology for teaching English in school (classroom English),
  • know the current curricula for teaching English in primary and secondary school and was able to use them in the design and implementation of teaching,
  • be able to plan teaching units (individual lessons and larger classes) on the basis of an annual plan,
  • know and know how to use different strategies and techniques for effective teaching, assessment, assessment and evaluation,
  • be able to plan and prepare various learning activities and teaching aids to effectively achieve the desired learning goals,
  • be able to relate language learning to learning specific content (i.e. content-based teaching and learning English)
  • be able to plan and implement class activities in a way that develops and promotes multicultural awareness and international cooperation

Assesment and completion:

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

To advance from the first to the second year, students must earn at least 21 ECTS from the double-major study programme Teaching English (or a total of 60 ECTS required in both double-major programs) and a certain number of credits provided by the second double-major study programme.

In order to advance to the second year, the student must complete all the first year obligations of the study programme Teaching English  in the courses Didactics of English 1, Didactics of English 2, Developing a language for future teachers, Pedagogical English 1 in the amount of 12 ECTS, must collect at least 6 ECTS from compulsory subjects from the first PDP assembly and 3 ECTS with elective courses in language or literature.

Conditions for obtaining a public document:

The student completes the double-major study programme after completing all the requirements of the study programme in both parts of the double-major study programme, presenting and successfully defending the master's thesis, thus collecting at least 120 ECTS (60 ECTS in one and 60 ECTS in the other part of the double-major study programme).
