  • any other completed first cycle (Bologna) academic higher education programme and linguistics; progression requires the passing of an examination in an ancient Indo-European language consisting of at least 10 credits; or
  • any other completed pre-Bologna or non-linguistics programme; candidates must pass differential examinations in core subjects totalling up to 60 credits.

Learning outcomes:
The qualification holder will be able to:
  • understand and describe linguistic phenomena in the diachronic perspective,
  • demonstrate in-depth knowledge of the basic principles of the comparative method and reconstruction and apply them,
  • perform basic research in the field of comparative linguistics,
  • autonomously reconstruct linguistic forms for older states from synchronic states,
  • demonstrate in-depth understanding of the genetic, areal and diachronic position of the Slovene language, 
  • explain those phenomena of the Slovene language that are not explainable on the basis of knowledge of the written history of the language but on the basis of reconstructed linguistic states,
  • predict the direction of development of language, and in particular of the Slovene language,
  • use the techniques of the comparative method and reconstruction for etymological purposes,
  • provide etymological explanations of the Slovene language,
  • perform research in the field of comparative linguistics,
  • quickly learn any Indo-European language.

Assesment and completion:
Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

In order to progress to the second year, students must have completed all course units from the first year of the second-cycle two-subject master's programme Comparative Linguistics, as prescribed by the curriculum and individual syllabuses, for a total of 30 credits. At the same time students must also meet the conditions for enrolment in the second year of the other subject in their two-subject study programme, i.e. a total of 60 credits.
