Enrolment in a master's or doctoral programme in biology or bioengineering/biotechnology is open to candidates who have completed an academic higher education programme, can demonstrate active proficiency in at least one world language and have relevant previous knowledge.

Adequate previous knowledge, which is assessed by the Department Senate of the Biotechnical Faculty or the senate or collegium responsible for the field chosen by the student.

At the proposal of the department senate or senate (collegium) responsible for the field, the Senate of the Biotechnical Faculty, or the Postgraduate Studies Committee authorised by the Senate, prescribes supplementary examinations (consisting of at least 30 credits) from the undergraduate programme in the selected field or a related field to candidates who do not possess adequate previous knowledge.

Candidates must pass supplementary examinations before the end of the second year of the postgraduate programme.

An exception to this is the field of landscape architecture, where students must pass examinations from the undergraduate programme before enrolling in the second year.

Learning outcomes:

The postgraduate programme in the protection of natural heritage is dedicated to the study of that part of nature to which we attribute special importance and, in particular, of relationships between man and nature with the aim of conserving this part of nature. The modern conception of the protection of natural heritage/valuable natural features is a complex activity that does not only involve thorough mastery of scientific content but also demands administrative and management skills.  By signing international documents, Slovenia has taken on specific obligations regarding the implementation of national legislation in the field of nature protection.

Assesment and completion:

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progression through the programme is possible if the student completes the course units prescribed by the study programme and other requirements prescribed by the statute.
