Admission requirements Entry conditions:

The conditions to enrol in the study programme are set out in accordance with Articles 38a and 38b of the Higher Education Act and Article 117 of the Statutes of the University of Ljubljana. In order to be eligible to enrol in the history of art study programme, candidates must: 

  • have completed a first-cycle study programme specialising in history of art, or
  • have completed any other first-cycle study programme, whereby they must also pass exams totalling a maximum of 30 ECTS credits from the below list of examination requirements:
    • Introduction to general history of art (5 ECTS),
    • Introduction to Slovenian history of art (5 ECTS),
    • Art of Early and High Middle Ages in Western Europe I and II (10 ECTS),
    • Art of Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period in Western Europe I and II (10 ECTS),
    • Art of the Modern Period in Western Europe I and II (10 ECTS),
    • Slovenian art in the Middle Ages I and II (10 ECTS) and,
    • Slovenian art in the Modern Period I and II (10 ECTS).

The selection of required subjects is made by the department's committee depending on the candidates previously attained education. 

The candidate may complete additional requirements during the first-cycle study course, in knowledge updating programmes or by passing the so-called bridging examinations before enrolling into the two-cycle master study programme.

Candidates who have completed equivalent study courses abroad also meet the conditions for enrolment and may enrol under the same conditions that apply to candidates who have completed their studies in Slovenia.

Learning outcomes:

The qualification holder will attain the following special competences:

  • the ability of logical and abstract analysis, synthesis and evaluation,
  • the ability of in-depth expression of knowledge from both fields of expertise in the oral and written form, and to critically evaluate the above,
  • the ability to develop one's own competences at professional level,
  • the ability to enhance and perfect the knowledge and skills acquired, and to combine them with other various fields of expertise,
  • the ability of independent consultation, interpretation and use of new knowledge resources in the professional and scientific field,
  • the ability to transfer one's knowledge and skills to other problem areas,
  • the ability to contextualise and upgrade information, and to interpret research results at a higher level,
  • the ability to use scientific research methods within a broader spectrum of problems in new circumstances,
  • originality and creativity both in solving expert/professional problems as well as in scientific work,
  • the ability to approach in an intra- and interdisciplinary manner the resolving of problems, conflict situations and work tasks,
  • the ability to deal with problems within a team,
  • the ability to organise and manage expert panels,
  • the ability of (self)evaluation and (self)assessment and of critical and comprehensive thinking,
  • ensuring the quality of one's own work and raising quality standards in the work environment.

 

The graduates will attain the following subject-specific competences:

  • good command of a specialised field of history of art at a higher level,
  • good command of the most recent art history theories, interpretations and methods,
  • the ability of critically following and interpreting the most recent developments in art history theory and practice,
  • the ability to form an expert and scientific contribution within history of art as a scientific discipline, and
  • the ability to demonstrate originality and creativity within art of history.

Assesment and completion:

Examination performance is scored as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

In order to progress from year one to year two, the student must have completed the study requirements for year one in the scope that allows him/her to reach 90 per cent of ECTS prescribed in the syllabus and individual curricula for year one, in the scope ranging from 54 to 69 ECTS in both two-major study programmes combined. 

In the event of exceptional circumstances (set out in Article 153 of the Statutes of the University of Ljubljana), the students – subject to a positive resolution of their application – who have completed 85 per cent of the requirements (i.e. accumulated 51 ECTS in both two-major study programmes combined). The decision on such progression is to be deliberated by the Student Issue Board, whereby the department may give its consultative opinion. 

The outstanding requirements must be completed before advancing into the following year. 

Pursuant to Article 152 of the Statutes of the University of Ljubljana, a student who has not completed all of the study requirements to progress into the following year, such as these are determined in the study programme, shall have the possibility to repeat the year in question once, provided that the conditions for repeating the year as set out in the study programme have been met. In order to be eligible to repeat a year within the framework of the proposed study programme is the completion of study requirements totalling 15 ECTS (25% of the total number of ECTS).

Conditions for obtaining a public document:

In order to complete the study programme, the student must have successfully completed in both two-major study programmes compulsory teaching practical work and defend his/her master's thesis, as well as completed all other study requirements set out in the second-cycle two-major study programme with a total of 12 ECTS credit points.
