  • A completed undergraduate (first-cycle) programme in a relevant field i.e. ethnology and cultural anthropology programme; or
  • a completed undergraduate programme in any humanities or social science field (first cycle, 180 credits); candidates must additionally complete 9 credits from a core ethnology module; or
  • a completed undergraduate programme in an engineering or natural sciences field (first cycle, 180 credits); candidates must additionally complete 30 credits from a core ethnology module; or
  • a completed undergraduate study programme consisting of 240 credits; students must complete the core ethnology module (9 credits if they have completed any humanities or social science programme, and 15 credits if they have completed a science or engineering programme); examinations passed to date may also be recognised, up to a total of 12 credits;
  • a completed pre-Bologna four-year academic programme in ethnology and cultural anthropology; in this case second-cycle course units up to a total of 60 credits are recognised; or
  • a completed professional higher education programme valid from 1 January 1994 to 11 June 2004; students must additionally complete 60 credits of the core ethnology module.

Learning outcomes:

The qualification holder will be able to:

  • demonstrate proficiency in the use of scholarly apparatus and the methods and techniques of ethnographic fieldwork and the ability to collect, record and document material and submit it to expert evaluation,
  • carry out motivational work in the field of culture; lead or participate in national and international (above all European) research projects, applied projects and development projects in the fields of heritage, contemporary culture, mass media, advertising, tourism, regional development programmes, etc.,
  • undertake independent research and professional work,
  • demonstrate understanding of transnational processes, cultural diversity and identities at the local, regional, national and supranational levels, demonstrate understanding of different cultural contexts, contacts and exchanges between nations, peoples and social groups (in particular in the European context),
  • make intercultural comparisons and address intercultural problems and conflicts,
  • demonstrate understanding of the distinct cultural attributes of different peoples and nations in Europe and on other continents,
  • use various forms of knowledge transfer, speak in public and communicate with the media,
  • autonomously evaluate and apply ethical criteria and show a commitment to professional ethics.

Assesment and completion:

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

In order to progress to the second year of the master's (second-cycle) programme, students must have completed 54 credits – in accordance with the practice of "one overlookable condition". Overlookable conditions do not include examinations in compulsory first-year subjects – students must pass these without exception.

In order to complete the programme, students must complete all course units prescribed by the study programme and the syllabuses of the subjects included in the individual programme. In order to complete the programme, students must complete course units totalling 120 credits and successfully defend a master's thesis.
