In order to be eligible for enrolment in the health science doctoral study programme, candidates must have finished:

  • a second-cycle study programme with a total of 180 ECTS, from the field of human health, social sciences or humanities.
  • a study programe educating for healthcare professions governed by EU directives, or other uniform master’s study course from the field of social sciences or humanities valued at 300 ECTS credit points
  • a study programme to attain university-level education in health science, social sciences or humanities, adopted prior to 11 June 2004
  • a Master of Science following a previously completed programme to attain university-level education in health science, social sciences or humanities. In accordance with the law and based on an application, these candidates are granted the recognition of study requirements equalling ECTS 60 credit points.
  • a study programme to attain specialisation, having previously completed a higher education specialist programme in an appropriate field of study. These candidates are assigned additional study requirements for various fields in the scope ranging between 30 to 60 ECTS credit points.

 

Everyone enrolled in accordance with the conditions a through d who completed courses in social sciences or humanities must provide proof of work experience in the field of public health issues, or proof of work as associates in healthcare teams or in teams working in the field of health in society.

All candidates must provide proof of publishing activity in their field of expertise and must be capable of using study materials in the English language.

Foreigners (candidates who are not citizens of EU member countries) or Slovenes without Slovenian citizenship who fulfil the requirements for enrolment may enrol in accordance with the provisions of the Rules on the call for enrolment and the implementation for enrolment in higher education, and of the Rules on the studies of foreigners and Slovenians without Slovenian citizenship in the Republic of Slovenia. The conditions for the admission of foreigners to doctoral study programmes are equal to those that apply to Slovenian citizens if the education they completed abroad is equivalent.

Before enrolling, a candidate selects a mentor and provides, at the latest upon enrolling, his/her consent to mentorship, and a list of his/her scientific publications from the field of the topic of the candidate’s doctoral thesis. The mentor or co-mentor providing support in the preparation of the doctoral thesis must hold a valid academic title of higher education teacher (assistant professor, full professor, associate professor) or researcher (research fellow, senior research fellow and research counsellor) and demonstrate research activity with appropriate scientific biography from the topic of the doctoral thesis. The minimum condition to demonstrate research activity of the mentor is to have accumulated 100 SICRIS points in the past five years in the case of fundamental research with bibliography, and 40 points in the case of applicative research along with proof of a successful transfer of such results into practice. The mentor is finally appointed in the process of applying for and obtaining consent to the topic of the doctoral thesis.

The mentor can also be a foreign specialist with a title comparable to teacher or researcher titles of the Faculty of Health Care. In such cases, the Faculty shall appoint a co-mentor.

General competences attained through the study course:

  • The ability to conceptualise, plan and implement projects to create new knowledge, participate in understanding the latter in practice, its application and foreseeing problems encountered in the process,
  • The ability of assessment in complex situations where there is not a lot of data, dealing with complex problems;

Assesment and completion:

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

A student will progress to year 2 if he/she accumulates at least 40 ECTS from completing the requirements of year 1, whereby the compulsory subject that must be passed to progress to year 2 is Research work and methodology of research.

In order to be eligible for exceptional progression to year 2, a student must accumulate at least 30 ECTS, whereby the missing exam cannot be Research work and methodology of research. In such a case, the granting of progression is decided by the Faculty’s Commission for scientific, research and development activities, to which such a student is required to address his/her application with appropriate supporting evidence.

A student progress to year 3 if the requirements passed from year 1 total 60 ECTS, and those from year 2 earn him/her a total of 45 ECTS at least.

He/she must pass the Doctoral seminar II (30 ECTS). The student must present the topic of the selected doctoral thesis (15 ECST) at the latest by the beginning of the second semester of year 2 (or the 3rd semester of the study course).

A student who failed to pass all of the obligations set out in the study programme is eligible to repeat a year once in the entire study course. The application to repeat a year can be granted by the Faculty’s Commission for scientific, research and development activities. The conditions for the defence of the doctoral thesis are defined in the rules adopted by the Faculty’s Senate.

Conditions for obtaining a public document:

The student writes his/her doctoral thesis and defends it after having completed all obligations. The condition to complete the study course is the completion of all obligations, the writing and defence of the doctoral thesis and the publication of an original scientific article in a magazine with a factor of influence.
