Candidates who have completed the following can enroll in the doctoral study programme Cultural Heritage Studies:

  • a second level study programme;
  • the current study programme for obtaining a university education;
  • a uniform master's degree if it lasted five years and was valued at 300 credit points;
  • previous study programmes for obtaining a specialization and have previously completed a higher professional programme if they have completed additional study obligations in the range of 30 to 60 credit points;
  • education abroad, equivalent to the aforementioned programmes.

General competences:

  • in-depth knowledge of the research context (local and global), basic conceptual, theoretical and methodological starting points in the field of heritage planning, protection and management cultures; - mastering abstract thinking and the ability to contextualize the spectrum of basic and specific knowledge and competencies in research and professional practice;
  • scientific research and professional autonomy, responsibility and criticism, and work and problem solving in groups;
  • the ability to identify relevant information, topics and accordingly design new and creative solutions;
  • competence and skill in international scientific engagement and communication of scientific research and professional achievements;

Subject-specific competences:

  • knowledge and mastery of the theoretical, conceptual and methodological foundations of the chosen field of study
  • knowledge and critical management of the acquired knowledge and modern trends in the field of heritage protection, planning and management in general, as well as within the chosen field of study
  • knowledge and mastery of specific technical and technological knowledge in the field of architectural heritage conservation
  • knowledge and understanding of heritage values ​​as well as their evolution and transformation
  • knowledge of processes and methods of economic valuation of heritage
  • knowledge and mastery of legal, normative, cultural and economic criteria, restrictions and institutions operating in the field of heritage
  • knowledge and mastery of the integrated approach in the field of heritage protection, planning and management, necessary for the creation of a modern and sustainable built environment.

Assesment and completion:

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

To progress to the second year, students must complete study obligations in the amount of at least 42 ECTS credits from the first year. In the second year, students submit an application for approval of the dissertation topic. The application is considered and approved by the UNG Senate, and in this process a three-member dissertation evaluation committee is appointed and one or two mentors are appointed. The procedures are set out in the uniform rules of FPŠ, which apply to all doctoral programmes at FPŠ UNG (Formal procedures for applying and defending a dissertation). To progress to the third year,  students must complete study obligations in the amount of 60 ECTS credits from the second year and have completed all obligations (60 ECTS) for the first year. The condition for enrollment in the third year is therefore collected 120 ECTS. To progress to the fourth year,  students must complete study obligations in the amount of 60 ECTS credits from the third year. The condition for enrollment in the fourth year is therefore 180 ECTS. The condition for enrollment in the fourth year is all completed obligations from the first three years (180 ECTS).

Conditions for obtaining a public document:

The condition for completing the studies is the completion of all exams and all obligations in all subjects according to the syllabus and the successful defense of the doctoral dissertation, for which the student collects 240 ECTS (for a 4-year study programme). As a condition for the approach to the defense of the dissertation, the student must, in addition to the provisions of the study programme, meet the general conditions set out in the rules of the Faculty of Postgraduate Studies: (http://www.ung.si/media/storage/cms/attachments/2019/04/15/ 11/09/23 / Formalni_postopki_pri_prijavi_zagovoru_disertacije_2019.pdf), show a grade of 8 or more in all subjects taken in the study programme and are graded with the existing numerical grading scale (http://www.ung.si/media/storage /cms/attachments/2019/04/15/11/08/31/ocene_doktorski_studiji_UNG_glava.pdf) and to submit one scientific article in the field of his / her research, which he / she conducted within the doctoral study programme. The article must be prepared in one of the widely used foreign languages ​​and sent or accepted for publication in an international scientific journal with an impact factor, as specified in the FPŠ study rules.
