Candidates who have completed the following can enroll in the doctoral study programme in Linguistics:

  • a second level study programme; or
  • Current study programme for obtaining a university education; or
  • Uniform master's degree if it lasted five years and is valued at 300 credit points; or
  • Previous study programmes for obtaining a specialization and have previously completed a professional higher programme if they have completed additional study obligations in the range of 30 to 60 credit points;
  • Education abroad, equivalent to the aforementioned programmes

  • The student gets acquainted with the latest directions of linguistics, especially in the field of syntax, phonetics and semantics, in the context of modern cognitive science.
  • The student gets acquainted with the possibilities of interdisciplinary connection of strict linguistics with natural sciences and mathematics. biology, cognitive psychology, mathematics, and neuroscience, and acquires the ability to formulate and solve problems at the intersections between these sciences.
  • The student gets acquainted with the methods of independent research work.
  • The student gets acquainted with the latest basic experimental methods of neurolinguistics and psycholinguistics.

Assesment and completion:

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

The condition for progression to the second year is the completion of 50 ECTS. The condition for progression to the third year is the completion of all obligations (60 ECTS) of the first year and the completion of 50 ECTS of the second year.

The condition for progression to the third year is, in addition to the mentioned ECTS, also the preparation of the topic of the doctoral dissertation, confirmed by the scientific council of the doctoral programme.

Conditions for obtaining a public document:

To complete the studies, the student must collect 240 credits (ECTS) and write and successfully defend a doctoral dissertation. Students who complete all obligations under this programme are awarded a doctorate of science by the University of Nova Gorica, which is a public document.
