Enrolment in the master's study programme Conservation of Nature and Natural Heritage is open to candidates who have completed:

  • a first-cycle study programme in relevant or other fields of expertise, consisting of at least 180 credits.
  • a professional higher education programme under the old programme in any field offered by the Biotechnical Faculty, or another first-cycle professional higher education programme at another university in Slovenia or abroad, consisting of at least 180 credits.

Learning outcomes:

The qualification holder will be able to:

  • develop the in-depth fundamental knowledge necessary for the eventual continuation of doctoral studies in the fields of management of renewable sources, nature conservation and natural heritage;
  • develop their capacity for interdisciplinary and group work and integrate theoretical findings with natural heritage protection practice;
  • develop the ability to integrate various types of knowledge which they are able to use at different levels and different socio-economic situations in their work in protected areas;
  • develop autonomy, a critical spirit, professionalism and an ethical attitude towards professional work and research and towards nature and natural heritage.

Subject-specific competences:

  • develop knowledge and skills in the field of conservation of nature, natural heritage protection, which will enable students;
  • find work in senior positions in these sectors as well as in education and research fields;
  • know the technological bases of food production, production of raw materials, the protection of natural heritage and spatial management, and in this way connect the natural environment, agro-ecosystems, socio-economic philosophical aspects of the sustainable use of nature and space and specially protected areas and valuable landscapes;
  • understand inanimate and botanical and zoological aspects of living natural heritage;
  • know the basics of cultural heritage protection;
  • understand the principles of landscape ecology and show proficiency in monitoring and methods of natural protection and management;
  • assess the justifiability of human interventions affecting the environment and nature;
  • use methods and techniques for monitoring the state of the environment and use them to evaluate measures to reduce harmful anthropogenic impacts in protected areas;
  • design new, more effective measures to protect renewable sources and predict the effectiveness of these measures;
  • know the domestic, European and international environmental, spatial planning and nature conservation legislation, and the activities and measures associated with it;
  • comprehensively plan the ideal balance between human activities and conserved and protected nature;
  • communicate and seek information using various tools and via various sources and educate them in the spirit of the need for continuous study and education.

Assesment and completion:

Students' knowledge is assessed by means of practical exercises and seminar papers, and also via products, projects, performances, services, etc. and by examinations. Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10). 

Progress:

In order to enrol in the second year, students must have completed all examinations from the first semester, one methodological examination and all practical classes, accumulating 48 credits.

The collegium of the BF may in exceptional cases approve progression to the next year for a student who has not completed all course units if justified grounds exist.

Justified grounds shall be considered to be those grounds listed in the Statute of the University of Ljubljana.

Conditions for obtaining a public document:

In order to complete the programme, students must complete all course units in all subjects in which they have enrolled, and a master's thesis.

 All the stated requirements total for 120 credits.
