Students of this postgraduate programme can continue their studies in a doctoral programme and become research fellows at the Faculty of Maritime Studies and Transport or leading researchers at related institutions.

Assesment and completion:

Students' knowledge is assessed by means of practical exercises and seminar papers, and also via products, projects, performances, services, etc. and by examinations. Examination performance is scored as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

The programme consists of an integrated set of compulsory subjects, several elective subjects and orientation subjects, of which the candidate chooses at most one. The candidate chooses selective and orientation subjects in agreement with the supervisor. Elective and orientation subjects are the basis for research in the master's thesis or doctoral dissertation. Students select a combination of subjects in order to reach a total of at least 120 credits (90 credits from subjects and 30 credits from the master's thesis). Subjects consist of lectures or seminars and individual work by candidates. As a rule, lectures only cover an introduction to the topic and a review of relevant literature, which students then work on individually. Individual research by the student accounts for 25% of course units (i.e. 30 credits) in the form of a master's thesis. With the agreement of the Faculty senate, students may obtain a maximum of 10 credits from the group of compulsory or elective subjects by passing examinations at another higher education institution at home or abroad.
Students may enrol in second-year subjects once they have completed at least 45 credits or covered at least 200 hours of seminars and lectures via examinations and seminars.
