  • Graduates of single-subject and two-subject academic bachelor's programmes in biology with an average grade of 8 or higher and active knowledge of English; or
  • graduates of other programmes, provided they have achieved an average grade of 8 or higher in undergraduate studies and have passed examinations set by the studies committee in botany, zoology and ecology, and possess active knowledge of English; or
  • candidates with a lower average grade may enrol in the study programme if they have a bibliography that includes at least one survey paper in the field of biology published by the candidate as sole author or co-author, or can demonstrate through their work other outstanding results in the field and possess active knowledge of English (the conditions required under this indent are verified by the Department of Biology and the head of the postgraduate programme in biology; candidates must also obtain a recommendation from a professor from their undergraduate programme).

Learning outcomes:

Qualification holders  are familiar with fundamental research methods in biology and with the group (or research problem) in which they have completed the research part of their master's thesis. They will also be familiar with selected research methods in biology and the moral and ethical aspects of research.

Assesment and completion:

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

In order to enrol in the second year, students must have completed all course units in Research Methodology in Biology (10 ECTS credits), Biology of a Selected Taxonomic Group (10 ECTS credits) and two elective subjects (for a total of 20 ECTS credits), and individual research in a research group or programme group (5 ECTS credits). As part of their individual research, students must carry out a presentation of a taxonomic group or research problem.

Conditions for obtaining a public document:

In order to complete the programme, students must complete all prescribed course units (examinations, seminar papers) in core subjects and elective subjects, individual research requirements, including presentation of a problem (or taxonomic group) in the form of a lecture, a seminar and research related to the master's thesis, and write and successfully defend a master's thesis. Graduates of this programme must complete the programme by the 30.9.2016.
