In order to enrol in the second-cycle study programme History candidates must have acquired:

  • a diploma in the first-cycle study programme in the fields of history, sociology, art history, sociology of culture and art, philosophy, heritage of Europe and Mediterranean, archaeology, art history, or other first-cycle study programmes in the fields of humanities and social sciences; or
  • a diploma in other first-cycle study programmes if prior to enrolment they have completed course units consisting of up to 60 credits.

Students take the differential examinations in the following subjects: History of Antiquity, Rise and fall of the cultural and economic centres of the Mediterranean, New Europe, History science structure and technique, General history of the Middle Ages, Structure of institutions, Material civilisation and economics, Auxiliary sciences of history, History of the Slovenes in the 19th and 20th centuries, Comparative history of Europe and the Mediterranean, General history of the 20th century.

The number of the differential examinations for the candidates from the second paragraph is determined according to previous study programme.

The number of the differential examinations can be adapted if, upon the student’s request, certain examinations from the previous study programmes are approved and regarded as passed differential examinations. Conditions for enrolment are also fulfilled by the candidates who have passed a comparable study programme abroad and are, according to the law, granted the right to continue education in the study programme.

Subject-specific competences:

  • acquaintance with key topics in the history of the world, Europe and Slovenia or Slovenian ethnic space, with special emphasis on the Mediterranean;
  • deepening of certain historical contents and combining them into modules that represent the planned acquisition of certain skills. This knowledge represents the first stage of specialization;
  • independent work using historical research and interpretation methods;
  • knowledge of the genres of sources and their characteristics and the ability to independently use historical sources for research work in the field of historiography;
  • management of theoretical problems of the profession and their solutions;
  • Ability to continue independent and team research studies and to independently deepen various issues.

Assesment and completion:

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

Students may advance in a higher year when they fulfil all the prescribed requirements in their current year (60 credits). The requirements for students in individual subjects are defined in the subjects’ curricula. Students may enrol in the second year if they accumulate 54 out of 60 credits of the study programme, while the missing 6 credits must not come from the compulsory subjects.

Conditions for obtaining a public document:

When students fulfil all the requirements under the study programme for obtaining the education (accumulate 90 credits by passing the exams and 30 credits by preparing a master's thesis), they complete the studies with the defence of their master's thesis. Students choose the theme for the master's thesis until the end of the winter semester of the first academic year, they also choose their mentor among the habilitated professors of all the compulsory and optional historical subjects. Students provide their master's thesis disposition until the end of the winter semester of the second year to be examined by the head of the study programme for approval/rejection. In this phase the collection of the material begins, and the beginning of the work is assessed by 6 credits. During the preparation of the master's thesis students individually consult their mentor.

The completion and defense of the thesis are graded by 24 credits; in total the students receive 30 credits. If a candidate does not submit the theme of his/her master's thesis in due time, he or she can apply for the deadline extension upon completion of the fourth semester. The deadline for the application is maximum two years after the end of the first additional year.

Upon a successful defence of the master's thesis students receive a diploma which is a public document. An integral part of a diploma is a diploma supplementary.
