Learning outcomes:
The qualification holder will be able to:
  • undertake professional work in the field of comparative linguistics,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the basic principles of the comparative method and reconstruction,
  • demonstrate knowledge of fundamental linguistic concepts,
  • demonstrate understanding of and describe linguistic phenomena from the point of view of diachronic development, with knowledge of the historical background of Indo-European languages,
  • demonstrate autonomous understanding of general linguistic issues, and analyse them,
  • use the techniques of the comparative method and reconstruction for etymological purposes,
  • demonstrate knowledge of the rudiments of all major Indo-European languages, both living and dead, and locate them in time and space,
  • understand and translate easier texts in any language of the Indo-European family using basic aids (dictionary, descriptive grammar),
  • quickly learn any Indo-European language.

Assesment and completion:
Students' knowledge is assessed by means of practical exercises and seminar papers, and also via products, projects, performances, services, etc. and by examinations. Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Progress:

In order to progress to the second year, students must have completed all first-year course units of the Comparative Linguistics programme, as prescribed by the curriculum and individual syllabuses, for a total of 30 credits. At the same time students must also meet the conditions for enrolment in the second year of the other subject in their two-subject study programme. In order to progress to the third year, students must have completed all second-year course units of the Comparative Linguistics programme, as prescribed by the curriculum and individual syllabuses, for a total of 30 credits. In order to progress to the third year students must therefore have completed prescribed course units totalling 60 credits and at the same time must meet the conditions for enrolment in the third year of the other subject in their two-subject study programme, in other words a total of 120 credits for the first and second years.

Conditions for obtaining a public document:

In order to complete the programme, students must complete all course units prescribed by the study programme and the syllabuses of individual subjects, for a total of 90 credits. The overall programme is only completed when students have completed all course units in both chosen disciplines, as laid down by the study programmes and syllabuses of individual subjects, for a total of 180 credits.
