General competences:

The CULTURAL HISTORY study programme strives to shape students into independent and well-rounded experts in the field of history. In doing so, it derives from the humanistic tradition, which is crucial to it; the vision of history as a process that "abolishes man" - this tendency was especially clear in the middle of the second half of the 20th century, when in some places even "history without names" began to be considered - is foreign to this programme.

Masters will be able to apply basic knowledge in concrete professional, especially scientific - research situations. Based on in-depth knowledge, they will be able to critically analyze a scientific problem, anticipate solutions by transferring their own and other people's experience, or by synthesizing their solutions according to specific situations. They will critically evaluate new cognitive tools and determine the appropriateness of transferring them to our environment. Complex knowledge will enable them to more quickly adapt both cultural-historical and historical knowledge to the needs of the profession and society.
With the help of acquired and, depending on the level of study, in-depth knowledge and established research methods, masters will be able to identify cultural-historical and general social problems, which they will solve through procedures and processes and through critical and self-critical assessment.
Complex knowledge will enable masters to react more quickly to problems that arise in society due to unresolved issues from the past, and in this way actively contribute to the tolerance and competitiveness of the border area. Students will develop their communication skills so that they can actively participate in solving problems that arise within local and regional communities, but also have a great impact on state and interstate relations. In this way, autonomy in their professional work will be strengthened. The programme explains to students the foundations of ethical reflection and commitment to professional ethics. Through seminar assignments and group projects, masters will acquire knowledge and skills for mutual cooperation and brainstorming, and with the help of acquired knowledge of foreign languages and the specifics of the border area, the possibility of active participation in international professional environments.

Familiarization with the basic features and items of the history of mentalities, women, family, childhood, everyday life, ideas, ideologies and intellectual development, which developed especially strongly in the world at the "end of the millennium", directs the master to the most modern but comprehensively critically tested paradigm of the field. On the other hand, the study does not neglect the "gold standard" of historical science, which is thematically represented by legal, ecclesiastical and partly also military history (although the latter is conceived more broadly, anthropologically, and not classically "militaristically").

Such an attitude ensures a versatile and modern profile of a master's student who will be able to engage in interdisciplinary work in the field. The master's student of the CULTURAL HISTORY program will understand and master as much as possible the difficult questions that arise in connection with the entire diachronic dimension of life. He is expected to actively co-create historical culture in Slovenia and in the wider European area.
Masters of the CULTURAL HISTORY programme are expected to develop the ability to independently take initiatives from elsewhere and at the same time to become aware of the specifics of the Slovene (especially West Slovene) space. It is the diversity of historical experiences and cultures that makes it impossible to mechanically lean on foreign models. Therefore, in the CULTURAL HISTORY programme, great emphasis is placed on the independent research work of students (with the verification of assistant professors ).
During their studies, masters establish a critically reflected awareness of Sloveneness, Europeanness and cosmopolitanism, and of the fact that personal and group identities of different levels are not excluded. Nor is it a hierarchy of different identities, but the specifics of the "angles" on which they are based.

Subject-specific competences:

In order to achieve the required and expected subject-specific competences, the study will acquaint students with the basic features and items of cultural history, history of ideas, ideologies and intellectual development and direct the master to the most modern but comprehensively critically tested paradigms. On the other hand, the study also substantiates the basic standards of historical science.

Such an attitude ensures a versatile and modern profile of a master's student who will be able to engage in interdisciplinary work in the field of humanities. The study will equip the master with basic knowledge and skills for cooperation in solving conceptual and practical issues in the protection of cultural heritage, in tourism and organization, and in public administration.
The study programme covers all key elements of historical culture. An important emphasis is also given to the theories of history, historiography, basic historical sciences, because without them there can be no methodological or conceptual progress in the profession. The latter is necessary in the processes of European integration and unification in order to enter into a dialogue with other cultures and civilizations.
The master will understand and to the greatest extent possible master the practical problems that arise in connection with the entire diachronic dimension of life, and will thus actively co-create historical cultures in Slovenia and in the wider European area. The master will be able to cooperate and connect with various disciplines, which is inevitable for the modern conception of history, both in theory and practice. This means that the field of work of undergraduates in the CULTURAL HISTORY programme is extremely wide: it ranges from conceptual planning to purely applicative intervention in everyday life. The latter emphasizes the need to develop the listeners' ability to accept diversity, which is inevitable in any border area. This is, in fact, one of the most important “practical” missions of studying history as cultural history.

Masters will learn about the general structure of the basic discipline, cultural history, and the connection between its subdisciplines through compulsory and elective subjects, where they will learn about the reasons for the existing hierarchy. Of course, the objects are designed in such a way that they will also enable critical reflection on this hierarchy and allow for the possibility of change.

Through its compulsory and elective subjects, the study programme will, in addition to theoretical knowledge, especially encourage solving specific work problems, such as project applications, preparation of studies, micro-research, group work on project applications, finding topics of interest for international cooperation at the local level ...
As the Nova Gorica Polytechnic encourages the intensive use of information and communication technology due to numerous science-oriented study programmes, special emphasis will also be placed on the transfer of this knowledge to the humanities. Thus, this technology will also enable masters of the Cultural History study programme to use intensive quantitative data processing methods, state-of-the-art data storage techniques and the possibility of a wide interdisciplinary multicultural discussion on the World Wide Web.

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate).
