Admission requirements
  • A completed first-cycle study programme consisting of 240 credits in International Relations, European Studies or Defence Studies; or
  • a completed first-cycle study programme consisting of 240 credits in any other field, if prior to enrolment the candidate has completed those course units that are essential for further study; or
  • a completed first-cycle study programme in any field consisting of 180 credits; before enrolling the candidate must complete subjects totalling 60 credits in the Social Sciences Preparatory Programme; or
  • a completed four-year professional higher education programme offered before the introduction of the Bologna reform and completed by the 2015/2016 academic year at the latest, in any field, if before enrolment the candidate has completed those course units that are essential for further study; or
  • a completed three-year professional higher education programme or specialisation following a short-cycle higher education programme offered before the introduction of the Bologna reform and completed by the 2015/2016 academic year at the latest, where candidates must make up the missing 60 credits by successfully completing the Social Sciences Preparatory Programme.

The qualification holder will be able to:

  • use various methodological tools to undertake, coordinate and organise research,
  • demonstrate a strategic orientation in the planning, evaluation and anticipation of the development of security issues and seek lasting and sustainable solutions to fundamental security problems,
  • express themselves in writing, make a public presentation and argue a point of view,
  • work effectively as part of a team/group,

  • manage changes in the field of international, national and human security,
  • demonstrate broad general knowledge of the social sciences,
  • demonstrate excellent knowledge of the international community in its developmental and structural dimensions,

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

The programme has a one-year duration so there is no progression to subsequent years.

Third-cycle doctoral study programmes (SQF level 10)

In order to complete the programme, students must complete all course units in all subjects in which they have enrolled and successfully defend a master's thesis via a public presentation.
