The qualification holder will be able to:

- develop their own competences at the professional level,
- search for new sources of knowledge in the relevant professional and academic field,
- demonstrate proficiency in the techniques of autonomous and independent research,
- interpret research results at a higher level,
- apply scientific research methods across a broader spectrum of problems and in new circumstances,
- demonstrate originality and creativity both in addressing technical problems and in scholarly work and
- take responsibility for managing highly demanding professional tasks,

- demonstrate mastery of a specialised field within the history of art at a higher level,
- demonstrate mastery of the latest theories, interpretations and methods within history of art,
- critically follow and interpret the latest developments in the theory and practice of history of art,
- formulate an original scholarly paper or other journal paper within history of art as an academic discipline,
- demonstrate originality and creativity within the history of art.
Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).
In order to progress to the second year, students must have completed all course units prescribed by the curriculum and individual syllabuses for the first year, for a total of 60 credits.
Third-cycle doctoral study programmes (SQF level 10)
To complete the study programme, students must complete all course units prescribed by the curriculum and individual syllabuses, for a total of 120 credits. In the final year of the programme, students write a relevant master's thesis, which must be successfully defended.
