The qualification holder will be able to:

  • undertake fieldwork in linguistics,
  • carry out research in the field of linguistics (theoretical and practical),

  • formulate and develop scientific theories, especially deductive theories,
  • demonstrate familiarity with the principal schools of linguistics and apply them while taking into account the linguistic facts of Slovene,
  • demonstrate familiarity with the theory of naturalness in linguistics, in particular with natural syntax as a Slovene contribution to linguistic theory,
  • explain phenomena of the Slovene language which are not specific to it but which are a special example of more general linguistics phenomena.

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

In order to progress to the second year of the programme, students must have completed all first-year course units of the second-cycle General Linguistics programme in the appropriate stream, as prescribed by the curriculum and individual syllabuses, for a total of 60 credits.

Third-cycle doctoral study programmes (SQF level 10)

In order to complete the programme, students must complete in full all course units prescribed by the curriculum and individual syllabuses, and prepare and successfully defend a suitable master's thesis.
