Admission requirements
  • A completed undergraduate study programme consisting of 240 credits in social sciences, law, interdisciplinary social science studies or the humanities; or
  • a completed first-cycle study programme in another field consisting of 240 credits, if prior to enrolment in the second cycle at the Faculty of Social Sciences the candidate has passed examinations totalling 10 credits (2 subject) as part of the Social Sciences Preparatory Programme in subjects selected by agreement with the programme administrator; or
  • a completed first-cycle study programme in any field in which the candidate has completed 180 credits if prior to enrolment in the second cycle at the Faculty of Social Sciences he or she has passed examinations totalling 60 credits as part of the Programme for Upgrading Social Sciences-Related Knowledge in subjects selected by agreement with the programme administrator; or
  • a completed four-year professional higher education programme offered before the introduction of the Bologna reform and completed by the 2015/2016 academic year at the latest, in one of the fields listed in the first indent; or
  • a completed four-year professional higher education programme in another field offered before the introduction of the Bologna reform and completed by the 2015/2016 academic year at the latest; the candidate must complete the subjects from the Social Sciences Preparatory Programme that are listed in the second indent; or
  • a completed three-year professional higher education programme offered before the introduction of the Bologna reform and completed by the 2015/2016 academic year at the latest; candidates may enrol in the master's programme under the conditions specified in the third indent.

The qualification holder will be able to:

  • demonstrate understanding of the priority developmental problems and dilemmas of today's world, with an emphasis on critical sociological, socioeconomic, historical anthropological, culturological, scientific, technical and environmental analysis of the prevailing economic development models,
  • demonstrate understanding of positive and negative development patterns, trends and results through observation of development events that are often narrowed down simply to economic approaches and interpretations,
  • approach phenomena and problems from several angles – top-down (the macro level), bottom-up (the micro level), intermediate (the mesoscopic level) or combined – via analysis of empirical material on practices or via empirical material on mentalities, etc.,
  • supplement their own general knowledge and understanding of the divergences in present-day development, with an emphasis on economic, environmental, historical anthropological or political aspects, depending on their interest and on the field they are working in or intend to work in.

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

The programme has a one-year duration so there is no progression to subsequent years.

Third-cycle doctoral study programmes (SQF level 10)

In order to complete the programme, students must complete all course units in all subjects in which they have enrolled and successfully defend a master's thesis via a public presentation.
