Admission requirements
  • A completed first-cycle study programme in a relevant field consisting of at least 180 ECTS credits (under the Bologna system); or
  • a completed study programme leading to a professional higher education qualification in a relevant field, offered between 1 January 1994 and 11 June 2004; or
  • a completed first-cycle study programme or programme leading to a higher education qualification offered between 1 January 1994 and 11 June 2004 in another field, where prior to enrolment candidates must pass differential examinations consisting of between 16 and 24 credits set by the academic affairs committee with regard to the field of previous study.

The qualification holder will be able to:

  • analyse, synthesise and envisage solutions and the consequences of phenomena in the field of law,
  • master research methods, procedures and processes in the field of social sciences and develop critical and self-critical assessment in the field of social sciences,
  • apply knowledge from fields of law,
  • demonstrate autonomy in professional work and in making business decisions,
  • develop communication skills and expertise, with an emphasis on communication in the international environment,
  • demonstrate a capacity for ethical reflection and a commitment to professional ethics in the business environment,
  • show a spirit of cooperation with colleagues, loyalty to employers and a cooperative approach,
  • work in a group and accept creative criticism and comments,

(subject-specific competences)

  • demonstrate a broad familiarity with the development and foundations of law as a discipline,
  • resolve specific professional problems through the application of scientific methods and procedures,
  • demonstrate coherent mastery of complex knowledge in the field of law,
  • introduce innovations into the discipline in accordance with its fundamental paradigms,
  • use analytical methods and, on this basis, legal strategies while constantly applying professional and moral/ethical critical assessment of solutions,
  • understand and apply critical analysis methods and development theories, and apply them in solving specific technical problems,
  • demonstrate a broad perspective within the field and use modern information and communication technology and information systems.

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

Students may progress to the next year if by the end of the academic year they have completed all requirements defined by the study programme for progression to the next year.

Third-cycle doctoral study programmes (SQF level 10)

In order to complete the programme, students must complete all course units prescribed by the study programme.
