Admission requirements
  • A completed undergraduate study programme consisting of 240 credits in social sciences, journalism and information science, law or humanities; or
  • a completed first-cycle study programme in another field consisting of 240 credits, if the candidate completes course units essential for further study totalling 40 credits (8 subjects), as follows: Basics of Communication Studies, Basics of Communication Studies Research, Theory of Media and Communication, Public Opinion, Communication Systems, Communication and New Technologies, Statistics, Psychology of Communication; for all these subjects, candidates can receive credit for knowledge acquired during previous studies; or
  • a completed first-cycle study programme in any field in which the candidate has completed 180 credits if prior to enrolment in the second cycle at the Faculty of Social Sciences he or she has passed examinations totalling 60 credits as part of the Programme for Upgrading Social Sciences-Related Knowledge in subjects selected by agreement with the programme administrator; or
  • a completed four-year professional higher education programme offered before the introduction of the Bologna reform and completed by the 2015/2016 academic year at the latest, in one of the fields listed in the first indent; or
  • a completed four-year professional higher education programme in another field offered before the introduction of the Bologna reform and completed by the 2015/2016 academic year at the latest, if the candidate completes the subjects from the Social Sciences Preparatory Programme that are listed in the second indent; or
  • a completed three-year professional higher education programme offered before the introduction of the Bologna reform and completed by the 2015/2016 academic year at the latest; candidates may enrol in the master's programme under the conditions specified in the third indent.

The qualification holder will be able to:

  • demonstrate in-depth understanding of the social importance of the legal regulation of the media and the communication industry and its effects on media content and ownership, technological development and the development of communication services,
  • demonstrate in-depth understanding of the historical and cultural background of the development of human communication rights and freedoms and the principles of openness and freedom of the press,
  • demonstrate in-depth understanding of public interest in the sphere of communication,
  • demonstrate in-depth understanding of the institutional and political context in which media law, media ethics and media (regulation) policies are formed at the national and international levels,
  • demonstrate in-depth understanding of the norms of criminal, civil and procedural law regarding communication in public and the protection of privacy.

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

The programme has a one-year duration so there is no progression to subsequent years.

Third-cycle doctoral study programmes (SQF level 10)

In order to complete the programme, students must complete all course units in all subjects in which they have enrolled and successfully defend a master's thesis via a public presentation.
