The qualification holder is be able to:

- acquire specialised knowledge on the basis of the study of existing theoretical models,
- functionally apply scientific methods,
- functionally apply the specific working methods of the historian in practice,
- think creatively and critically and integrate facts and rules into new combinations of knowledge,
- transfer theoretical knowledge into practice,

- apply research methods in the preparation of research,
- demonstrate autonomy in research and use critical judgement when making decisions,
- independently apply acquired theoretical knowledge to solve problems in practice,

- demonstrate knowledge and understanding of history as a discipline,
- demonstrate knowledge of and proficiency in research methodology in historiography,

- demonstrate knowledge of modern theoretical and methodological research approaches in historiography and their application,
- compare Slovene historiography to world historiography,
- plan, conduct, evaluate and present own research using modern audio-visual equipment,

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).
In order to progress to the second year, students must have completed first-year course units totalling 40 credits; in order to enrol in the third year, students must have completed second-year course units totalling 40 credits.
In order to complete the programme, students must complete all course units envisaged by the study programme, for a total of 180 credits (pass all examinations prescribed by the study programme, and prepare and successfully defend a doctoral dissertation).
