The qualification holder is be able to:
- demonstrate understanding of a selected research field and its position within the broader field of the humanities or social sciences,
- demonstrate understanding of the most complex social, cultural and religious problems, their contexts, differences and connections, and modern plurality,
- demonstrate understanding of religious and ethical texts and artistic works and the messages they contain,
- engage in dialogue as a path to a common approach to the truth,
- demonstrate understanding of alternatives and real solutions,
- demonstrate understanding of the ethical and legal frameworks of research,
- carry out autonomous creative research, formulate scientific hypotheses, think analytically, synthetically and holistically, apply and develop research methods,
- address problems at the highest level with a theoretical/methodological, critical and self-critical approach,
- acquire, record, document, use and evaluate sources of knowledge and information,
- use and develop scholarly apparatus,

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).
In order to progress to the second year, students must have completed at least 25 credits from taught course units and 30 credits from individual study/research. In order to enrol in the third year, students must have completed all first-year course units, at least 15 credits from taught course units in the second year and 35 credits from individual second-year study/research.
In order to complete the programme, students must complete all course units prescribed by the programme (both taught units and individual study/research), and successfully defend a doctoral dissertation. Further to a decision of the Senate of the University of Ljubljana at its 28th Session on 10 May 2005, the publication of at least one research paper is also a condition for completion of the programme, whereby students complete all programme requirements for a total of 180 credits.
