The qualification holder will be able to:

  • analyse, synthesise and anticipate solutions and consequences in the field of environmental protection,
  • keep records of and define environmental problems, analyse problems and prepare technically justified solutions,
  • develop communication skills and abilities, particularly communication in the international environment,
  • apply scientific methods to the addressing of technical problems,
  • apply acquired knowledge in practice,
  • develop a responsible attitude towards quality assurance in their own work,

(subject-specific competences)

  • demonstrate familiarity with and understanding of the history of environmental movements and environmental policy and the concepts involved,
  • demonstrate familiarity with an understanding of chemical, physical and biological processes, concepts and technologies,
  • demonstrate understanding of legislation in the field of environmental protection and links with other knowledge from the field when addressing legal problems relating to environmental protection,
  • demonstrate understanding of environmental impact assessments,
  • make assessments of the state of the environment at the local, national and international levels, draw up background documentation for decision-making,
  • evaluate nature and procedures to determine the status of a valuable natural feature at the technical and administrative levels,
  • demonstrate understanding of the economic policy of environmental protection and links with other knowledge from the field of environmental protection,
  • demonstrate understanding of the importance and forms of public cooperation in decision-making (co-decision-making) on environmental matters,
  • use ICT and information sources with an emphasis on online public databases and EU services.

Examination performance is graded as follows: 10 (excellent); 9 (very good: above-average knowledge but with some mistakes); 8 (very good: solid results); 7 (good); 6 (adequate: knowledge satisfies minimum criteria); 5–1 (inadequate). In order to pass an examination, a candidate must achieve a grade between adequate (6) and excellent (10).

In order to progress to the next year, students must complete course units defined by the study programme as follows: to progress from the first year to the second year, first-year course units consisting of 60 credits; to progress from the second year to the third year, all first-year course units and second-year course units consisting of 60 credits. 
A candidate who does not complete all course units may submit a written application to the Academic Affairs Committee requesting enrolment in the next year provided he or she has completed at least 45 credits from the current year and submits proof of justified grounds as defined by the statute.

Second-cycle master's study programmes (SQF level 8)

In order to complete the programme, students must complete all course units prescribed by the programme, successfully complete at least 70 hours of practical training, and write and successfully defend a bachelor's thesis.
